Fantastic news for residents and visitors alike: as of January 1st, several Portuguese motorways will be toll-free, including the A22 (Via do Infante) in the beautiful Algarve!
This exciting change addresses years of frustration, particularly in the Algarve, where the A22 tolls have been a source of contention since December 2011. For over a decade, groups such as the Via do Infante Users Commission (CUVI) have passionately fought against the tolls, highlighting their detrimental effects on local communities and businesses.
Beyond the price, the toll payment system itself has been confusing, leading to many residents and tourists receiving unexpected fines.
To celebrate this victory, CUVI is organizing a “horn-honking” demonstration on January 1, 2025, at key points along the A22. However, they emphasize that their mission is far from over.
They are demanding the removal of toll barriers to prevent their future return and a review of the existing contract with the private concessionaire, claiming it has cost the state millions.
This positive development follows the approval of a Socialist Party (PS) law in May 2024, eliminating tolls on ex-SCUT (formerly free) roads, including these vital routes:
• A4: Transmontana and Marão Tunnel
• A13 and A13-1: Pinhal Interior
• A22: Algarve
• A23: Beira Interior
• A24: Interior Norte
• A25: Beira Litoral and Beira Alta
• A28: Litoral Norte (Esposende to Antas, and Neiva to Darque)
These changes offer welcome freedom for property owners e travelers, allowing them to enjoy the Algarve’s impressive infrastructure without the inconvenience of toll charges.
